Code of Conduct

The following does not constitute a legal document, rather they are intended to provide a general insight into moderation policies; final interpretation is up to the administration of The Bark House.

The Bark House is a public Mastodon instance which openly federates with other servers using the ActivityPub social networking protocol. Because this is a decentralised network, interacting with other servers requires adherence to their own individual codes of conduct. For more information, please visit the websites of the instances involved.

As a member of The Bark House, you have the right to be treated fairly, equally, and in good faith. You also have the responsibility to behave in a way that does not negatively impact other members, moderators, administrators, people who interact with The Bark House, or The Bark House's reputation.

We do not allow illegal content on our server, as per EU and UK laws. In particular, we do not allow threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour on account of another's:

  • colour
  • race
  • disability or mental health
  • nationality (including citizenship)
  • ethnic or national origin
  • religion
  • gender identity
  • sexual orientation

All other laws pertaining to the UK or other EU states apply here.

Excessive advertising, uncurated news bots posting from third-party sources, and untagged gore and sexual content will be removed from the public timeline.

Harassment, especially continued harassment after being told to cease, posting of a person's private information without permission, or inciting others to interact with another user after said user has requested for said engagement to cease, is not allowed, and will lead to revocation of access to this service.

We encourage the appropriate use of hashtags, content warnings, and the "sensitive media" tag, in particular for the following content:

Required; failure to tag as sensitive will result in removal of the offending content from the public timeline. Repeated failure to adhere to this rule will result in account suspension:

  • nudity, pornography, or sexually explicit content, including artistic depictions
  • gore and extremely graphic violence, including artistic depictions

Encouraged; failure to use a content warning will result in a caution:

  • content which may trigger phobias, including, but not limited to, arachnophobia (fear of spiders), scopophobia (fear of eye contact), trypophobia (fear of irregular holes), haemophobia (fear of blood and gore)
  • content which may spoil media, such as plot twists or other content in movies, television, books, and video games.
  • political content, in particular the results of ongoing elections, current affairs, or discussion of ideology
  • content which may otherwise cause distress or upset in sensitive individuals

Ideally:

  • discussion of ongoing events which may otherwise drown the timeline; please use appropriate hashtags to allow users to filter these out

The content of this document may change; any changes to this document will be broadcasted on the public timeline.
